I for one am on board to endorse/support the bill because I believe it’s the best thing going for that land right now, and should be designated as wilderness. And though the club has taken no official position, about 2 months ago Pres. Jon ask for a “feeling” of favor by a show of hands…about 28 raised their hands, only 2 at that time raised their hands in disfavor. Since then, I know of about 4 others in disfavor and about 5 more in favor. In essence, you be the judge…

“thanks for the tip on the dam & road. Although I understand the concern, it appears to be pretty stupid…Baker Dam possibly being hit by terrorists, what a joke. If terrorists want to hit something, they certainly would choose something of a more grand scale than that, more like Grand Coolee or Boeng, ect. I heard Barny Fife wason duty up there recenly, too.”

“Raichle Montagnas are the best boot ever made. I pad $240. for mine 20 years ago and will attest they’ve out done all other full leather boots on steep granite, steep fir needle slopes, ice-conditons with crampons, ect. For off-trail rugged travel, nothing will compare or hold up even to water, but with them not available around these parts anymore, one might opt for what Brain suggests. My Montagnas are at Dave Page’s cobbler shop as we speak for a resole and fixer job-at the cost of $120.00. I had a pair of Raichle Eigers but they didn’t fit well so I sold them to Jim Tobler, another Trail Blazer, and he liked them. Lastly, I won’t part with my Montagnas, though i do ware other boots from time to time.”

BC says:^^They’ve also change their policy of where a pass is necessary. In years past it was needed at all trailheads. Now it is needed only at designated sites.^^^^This I think the FS was Right On in doing.

“Mike, a good report! Well appreciated! As I’ve seen too, the North country hasn’t really thawed much even with the recent 90 degree weather. Appears to be a really late season with some lakes probably not even opening up this year, similar to about 3 years ago.”

“To stay in shape, I hike/climb as much as possible year round, twice to three times per week, otherwise I lose it. I don’t play any sports anymore, too man chances for injury especially contact sports. The mountains and getting up into the high land( at least to me) is far more important than some game played with a ball, though I love to watch ballgames: (baseball & football). Nature is my reality.^^At 50, I stretch some before the pack goes on, I also ware a knee brace for the bad one. When on trail or off, the mind is kept off the pounding feet and concentrated on the surrundings…with eyes searching for intimate details, ears focused, and nose scenting. Anything to take the foot pounding druge away. Conversation with a Pal really helps, too.”

“Yes, I remember your read on that trip and where you were going. That was one reason as to why I went up there a few days ago, remembering your read, the wildflowers, etc. So, in essence, you inspired me to go…where sould I go day?^^Now, I look forward to te 24 photos I took, some very close-up hours work of wildflowers. I free-climbed most of the peaks left & right of the old lookout site, some were rather airy to say the least, and I am not afraid to say my nerve got shot on one of them. But what a wonderful beautiful blue-sky day! Though I saw some folks up there, most were coming down as I went up. And I was the last soldier to leave the top in the evening. At the Trailhead, ran into a couple headed up, then 3 fishermen with overnight packs…told them the lake was 80% frozen…they didn’t like that.”

“I’d be wlling to bet that most all those lakes are still mostly frozen, seeing that Sauk Mtn. Lake was 80% last Wed. july 24th. Still aot of snow in the North Country above 4,000 feet.”

“Brian,^^Interesting? I usually accept someone’s word for where they have been and don’t think about them BSing, but I guess some are full of it. I have noticed however, some people hit me with inquires about the many places I’ve been, similar to all your exploits. And though I haven’t been everywhere by no means, I’ve been doing this stuff for 40 years so the places do add up. Because of this, people like you and your father and I a well as some others inthe club, have developed a rep like Mike has alluded too. Humbled somewhat by the thought, I can only attest that I am just a simple man who has spent a lifetime enjoying just being in nature, where that leads me is only part of the journey or quest.^^^^Mike, I see by your post about the pot that drains into Royal Basin tht you must have been there to see th same view. Noted, you are the first I’ve known to have stated they know ehere that is at. You got my vote!^^^^Photo documentation and a well marked USGS quad have sure helped me in the past when someone doubted the veracity of my statements about where I’ve been.””^^^^I certainly hope, nobody doubts my adventures, that’s all they are, adventures…many are documented in the Trail Blazers Annuals now going on almost 25 years. My web site is only a fraction of them and most have been scrutinized with many just left off because of routes to fragile little lakes and or sometimes fishing information.^^”””

That is a great alpinist climb, never done myself, know a few who have though, however been in some pretty remote stuff within th Boulder Rv. Wilderess…Three Fingers, Bullon, Mt. Ditney, etc. Whitehorse is awesome, see for photo: http://www.alpinequest.com/whitehorse.htm^^”””

Glad to talk with you, hope you can come to the Trail Blazers meetings as I don’t think we’ve met yet? Speaking of Terror, a fellow Trail Blazer (Mike Swayne) who is also an attendence regular at the meetings, did the first ascent of Terror with Cooper in 1961. That read is on my site contributed by Swayne.”
