Yes I’ve had some trouble with that line as well, but I still have this small box 100yds and carry it as a back up if I break off most of what is on the spool. I generally replace all my line every two years and it’s time again so I will be looking for something new, I’ll have a look at the fireline.
I have WAY more flies than this. I started tying my own a few years back and for two winters about 8 years ago went crazy filling dozens of my boxes and all those of my father too. I have not managed to loose enough or have needed to replace many of them. I find a handful patterns that seem to work most of the time, mountain fish don’t seem impressed with my fly tying they seem to eat just about anything. The hard part is limiting yourself to a realistic number of flies that will be used on a trip. If I tried I could not cut off and re-tie all the flies I carry in an afternoon.
I have many other fishing rods and love the casting action of the Spinmatic-X from Daiwa but usually pack the telescopic rod because it is smaller and easier string up. When I am passing many small lakes I usually keep the telescopic rod strung up with reel and lure together, just hooking the lure under the reel seat and compressing the whole thing. When I walk by a small lake all I need to do is free the lure and stretch it out and cast away as I walk.
I like the foam box from Orvis (don’t seem to have them anymore) that everything fits in, so when I get to a lake I can drop my pack and grab this foam box and circle the lake with all my fishing gear, plus it floats. 😀

This is my complete setup although I don’t carry the cigar anymore. I used to smoke them when camping in places I couldn’t build a fire but got tired of trying to get the smell out of my hiking gear.
This pretty much covers all fishing situations I come across in the mountain lakes, extra line if I break whats on the spool and a sink tip (pre-looped) to add to the fly line for going sub surface, etc, etc. The whole thing weighs about 2.5 lbs and I can par that down when I get real with myself and shave off a box of flies or two, how many can you really use?

I’ve been in this area several times to help stock lakes and even to stock one of my own four years ago. In 2005 the tree was still standing but was badly damaged and I didn’t think it would last long. I’m sure someone if not me will personally see to it that it finds a new home, either in a new tree or in the TB’er library, I’m surprised it hung there as long as it did. Thanks for leaving it there.
I will need to stock my lake in this area again in 2008 if you wish to tag along I will find some way to contact you, let me know.

I’m headed to the Frank Church myself again this year, on or around the 3rd-11th of Sep. Went in last year and got pushed out by a nasty storm in mid September camping at Harbor Lake, beautiful area, caught a few Cutts in Wilson. If the weather holds I hope to vist more of the area this year.

Ok this is not my smallest ever but most likely the smallest I have on film. Anyway the lure is the smallest needle fish that you can get about 1.25 inches so you will have to guess at the size of the fish I didn’t measure it
I was wandering at the time what the h*** this little guy was thinking he couldn’t possible swallow that lure??? I almost cast him across the lake not realizing he was even on my line until he came out of the water wiggling a bit

Well if 20 inches is the bench mark then I guess I’m part of the club. I will submit this picture in as serious a manor that I can. I have other 20+ inchers that were not caught in the mountains can they be posted here (I didn’t see a high lake qualifier)???
My buddie and I set up our cameras as we noticed the nice light show behind us as we finished up dinner. I captured it at several different stages but this is my favorite. Stiched together 4 pictures to make this…..I have no need to carry wide angle lenses with the software today.

“Big Greider Lake is a great place to try out on your first adventure for Golden trout for a few reasons. I am personally the guy that carries the fingerlings in there each year. This is done so that there are many ‘class’ sizes and a good supply. BGL is large and can handle some pressure, not to mention one of the easiest hikes to a golden lake you are goning to find. My 5 & 8 year old kids made it all the way there and back last year without help, and had a great time. If you can’t make it to this lake you will never make it to any other Golden lake becasue most are more difficult to reach. Since I have no idea of your hiking skill???^^^^One other note BGL also contains Rainbow trout so there is a chance to catch a fish that is not a Golden, but they are easy to tell apart. The rainbow tend to hang out”” at the south end of the lake and I have caught them up to 15 inches, but you will need a raft to get there, the lake is not easy to get around. Cross the log jam and fish it from the east side if you don’t have a raft. Oh and let me know how it goes. You could probably hike to this lake right now its at 2932 feet elevation but most likly still has some ice on it, but it always open earlier than any other golden lake I know of. There is one better but not by much and that is returning to a lake after a few years to see how they’ve grown. ^^^^
