Mr Fly: You best forget Bengston unless you were lucky enough to get a Hancock Area Permit – otherwise about 15 or so miles on present-day roads from that gate you mentioned (Hiway2?). Unfortunately you cannot even ride with someone who has a permit (not allowed) – there is a way to walk old roads that is about 7 miles but you might be called names if you did and your car might be rifled by the time you got back. I would stick to Shaw and maybe Wallace lakes for a better experience, but fair walking distance themselves (5-6 miles); you can also walk in from the Hancock gate at Spur 10 on North Fk Snoqualmie to Klaus, Boyle, and Bridges Chain of lakes for decent fishing and fairly short walk of 1.5-3 miles.
Re: Park lakes – These lakes have been stocked for decades with many different species , and I have never seen a bona-fide report of fish caught – I was there 2 summers ago and saw no fish food organisms whatsoever in the lower lake in early august.
Fishing in Waptus Lake is excellent at times for both Brooks and Bull trout, and there have been several pics that depict fish that look like Hybrids between the two. WDFW states that those species WILL hybridize, thus a fish that looks externally like a bull trout could well be a hybrid, and thus legal to keep. I thought it was interesting to see the large rafts in the picture – is it possible they were taken in by helicopter (Wilderness).
Mike, Just love your reports and your ability to find the hotspots — This reply is a bit late but did want you to know there is an easier way in – back in the 70’s there were overnight outings there with guys wives and little kids who took the “easy” way in . I’m not sure I could find it again , since its been years since used, but maybe!
