Great letter, Ken. I see one typo. The website listed for the Hi Lakers should not have the dash. It’s just Hilakers.org.
Looks bang on to me. Thanks, Rodney.
I can answer that one Kathy. Bob and I did a three day trip into the Necklace Valley about 6-7 years ago to survey Lepul which I had planted about 10 years prior and to try and echo sound the “new” lake which had formed at the base of what was the Hinman glacier. The area is extremely “new” in that it looks like the glacier has just left covering the area yesterday. All the rock is very loose and there is rubble on every rock surface making footing pretty sketchy. The new lake is way down there and we decided that the only way we would be able to access it was to down climb to below the outlet and go in following the outflow. We could not see the upper end of the basin the lake was in well enough to determine if we could make it to the water from that side. Considering the effort taken to climb to Lepul we decided to sound Lepul and survey it instead. Bob had packed in a depth sounder and used my raft (his developed a large leak in the bottom which caused him to de-boat in a hurry after launching at the far end of the lake). He ran transects in the raft and recorded his positions on his GPS for each depth sounding location. I think that equals pretty accurate data for mapping the lake contours.
Oh good. So far I’ve got at least third place sewn up!
Mike, it’s almost embarrassing as to how little work I have to put into the rods I build relative to what you have to do. If I don’t do any fancy thread or feather work I can have a rod ready to fish in a week from start to finish. I’m just waiting for the finish epoxy to arrive which I have gotten donated by the makers of U-40. I’m in awe of the work you do.
Two observations – One is that donations to the Hi Lakers are not tax deductible – the Hi Lakers are not a 501-c(3) status organization. Also I notice that we still have last years social date on the solicitation letter. That will need to be changed as soon as we know the new date for 2012.
Great news that Mike is doing another rod. I’ve never seen so much excitement generated for a raffle as we had last year.
(BTW) I will be building a 4 piece 9′ 5 weight rod for the Trail Blazers side of the raffle prize.
– PeteMick – I think the Jim Tobler point that was made the other night was that even though he said some time ago (repeatedly) that the meetings were no fun to come to any more, he still DOES come to all the meetings, which speaks to the “tribal” connection we all feel for each other and for the group as a unit. Sandy was the one making the point at the time and in the end he and Jim shook hands and shared grins. Good to see.
Allison – I think it would come under the classification of “getting individuals more involved in the process and making it more interesting for the sponsors”. Not just leaving it up to Rex to do all the work by himself.
For those of you who don’t know. The pack Rex is using is not a Trapper Nelson. The pack boards he and Yanling use are ones that they made themselves. They have used them for many years. Am I correct, Rex and Yanling?
I just don’t think it should be us (TB’s) who are the ones who are planting the lakes for them. If they want to turn the farm into a pay to play situation, then that will be a financial decision on their part and they will be the ones planting the lakes. They will have to get a permit, like any other private land owner, to allow them to transport fish from a private hatchery to their lakes, in order to keep them in production. As has been stated, the State will not continue to authorize planting if the lakes are not accessible to the general public, and I would support that decision at this point.
I’d do the large arbor Orvis. Good weight and a smooth running reel. Probably can get a reel and extra spool for your $200. I’ve used one for years with my 4 weight. Also, Orvis can’t be beat for standing behind their products so if you did one of those mean, nasty things to your reel you’d have more recourse. I’ll be getting two new spools for my reel for my high lakes fishing.
Sorry Brian, I asked for that one. I meant that they were real cranberries and not some other berry that just happened to get that name because they looked like cranberries. They most definitely have a richer flavor than the cultivated ones. They are smaller and you feel better about them because you worked your butt off to get a supply (and your hammies are sore the next day from bending over for hours!)

November 7, 2011 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Permit Required for all on Snoqualmie Tree Farm Next year #95658Tom – They wouldn’t be charging to go to those lakes, just to walk on their property. And if you just happened to previously use their property to get to those lakes because it was the easiest route, well……. they will say “tough”, go another way. It’s a bum deal for sure. The Sunday Lake situation may be somewhat different as it actually has a Forest Service trail sign on it. The others were just roads that got us closer to the lake than the old routes did.
Jed, I forgot to reply to your question about the cranberries. They are just like the ones in the store. Cranberry sauce with the turkey, muffins, I just had them in pancakes for breakfast. And don’t forget the cranberry bread!!
