I’ve made the last several plants at Hell and Ginette. Ginette is a mystery of sorts, only once have I seen fish and caught fish there, seems deep enough for survival, and it doesn’t seem like it gets fished so hard that it’s being fished out. I have heard, not seen, that a group that camps on Hell Lake during hunting season fishes it out, but the last several times I’ve been there fish of catchable size have been present. I rather doubt the 50 foot depth there, and it has winter/summer killed in the past.

I, too, am interested in the impact of the recent fires. Phantom Lake in the South Fork of the Tieton has fire go right above it with little or no impact that I could discern on the lake. I visited 3 Sombreros Lake in the Crow Creek drainage that was much more drastically burned up to by Norse Peak fire and could perceive little impact there, either. I’m eager to get further down into the Crow Creek drainage to Anna and Crescents Lakes and Hell Lake as well this summer. I was nervous about getting into the Norse Peak fire area only a year removed from the fire for fear of deadfall, and although common sense should be exercised, I’m less nervous. I’m under the impression that the Miriam Fire did not burn up to or over Hell Lake, but I’m eager to see it. Shouldn’t be much longer for the PCT to be snow free around White Pass.

I am pretty familiar with Sandstone. The first time I found it, almost no water, I thought, “you’ve got to be kidding me,” but subsequent years have found it with plenty of water and fish survive in it. Early in the year, it’s very muddy, but it will settle out and by August/September it’s clear. The local biologists cross the river, usually later in fall, but we’ve pioneered a route off the top, using game trails and some cross country travel. It’s not terribly far off the top, but very steep, lots of deadfalls. Fishing can be pretty good, lightly visited, only once have I seen people there and not much other sign of the flotsam and jetsom of human beings.
