We kept going because we saw the vandalism. I was pretty sure the “perps” had left, but you never know.

I’m pretty good about not forgetting about flipping up the bail, in fact my mantra is “flip, hold, and toss” lol. But yep, those Whoopies go WAY far when this happens!

edit: I’m using a swivel with the whoopie too. As well as Doug is. It is bizarre to me I’m breaking them off, and he isn’t.

Thanks for the reply, Brian. The 4lb mono that kept on breaking on me was brand new, I bought it probably less than 2 months ago with the new Shimano reel you recommended on nwhikers.net. I initially thought it was a problem with that particular line, but I did the exact same thing on Doug’s rod last weekend, the line is a year old, and a different color – more golden – and also 4lb mono. And he isn’t experiencing that problem. It must be something with the way I cast. And trust me, I’m not some steroid built Amazon! I’m 5’2 with no upper body strength.

It only happens with the “Wyoming Whoopie” lure btw – which is heavier than the others.

You’ve echoed my concern with the visibility of that monster 10lb fireline. Should I dump it and get 4lb fireline? Also, Doug says the guy did not want to put on 6lb mono because the Shimano reel was so small….

I should have asked before he went down, but I thought I would be fishing today….. Didn’t try due to car vandalism @ Lake Margaret TH.

I came across this older thread looking for an answer about fireline weight. I started with 4lb mono this spring, but lately it’s been breaking with just my cast. It’s a weird feeling to see your lure go sailing waay out there, then realize it wasn’t your best cast ever – the dang line broke with just your cast, and your lure is a goner!

Anyway yesterday Doug kindly took my reel in, explained the problem, and they sold him 10 lb fireline in crystal. The guy said it was the same diameter as 4lb mono.

Is this too much line for trout fishing? Several folks in this thread referenced using 4lb fireline, which apparently is stronger than 4lb mono, but being thinner can allow one to cast farther?

          Any advice is appreciated.

Consider down or a puffy synthetic layer instead of fleece. It’ll save bulk and weight.

This is the one thing I am having “issues” with. I am still dragging our fleece jackets on our overnighters (approx 14 oz) because: they are very durable, no worries about snagging on brush or getting wetted out from damp brush. Plus it is very cozy as part of a sleep system. And the skeeters can’t bite thru it 😆 (Black Diamond & Helly Hansen).

I actually invested in a Western Mountaineering Flight down jacket, 9oz (on sale!) which I have used in the late fall. But it still is not the jacket I will take in the summer because of the above reasons…

Well I did go out today, rain gear packed. Oddly enough, once we went over Snoqualmie Pass the rain completely ended ( we took the Hyak exit). So I guess I can’t personally answer the question after all!

No rain, no fish, and I rammed my right knee into a rock trying to retrieve a snagged lure ( got it). Cast some more, then realized my leg was ummm… not working. Had a hideous hike out – I could stand on it, but not bend it. And did I mention it is my birthday???? I had an ugly experience last year on my b’day as well (heat exhaustion, never made the lake). I think I’ll stay home in ’08 on this day.

But I will try fishin’ in the rain based on your comments.

Thanks for replies – sounds encouraging!

Dave, I’m not as ultralight as I’d like to be – in fact I’ll just call myself “light”. I have a thing about bugs, and have had a couple of horrific encounters with skeeters that pretty much mandates a full-on tent as far as I’m concerned. I recall using headnets and diving into the tent one at a time frantically zipping it up. The Curtis raft paddles do dandy second duty as skeeter swatters inside a tent 😆

                We currently use:

*Thermarest Prolite 3 Short 13 oz (luxury but…. at least it packs small)
*WM Highlite 35 degree bag 16 oz
*Moonbow Gear 2 person custom tent approx 2 lbs total weight (The tent weight varies, I’m a gear hound just sold 2 tents and am buying one more 3lb)
*GoLite Race Pack 1lb 9 oz & Granite Gear Vapor Trail 2lbs.

Altho we also own heavier bags, we prefer if weather permits to leverage the Highlites with clothing that we carry anyway, as the bag packs so dang small. Just our way of doing it. We pretty much just do overnighters not week long trips.

How DO you tarp folks deal with the skeeters!

As mentioned previously, eastside melts out earlier. For example, Lake Caroline in the Enchantments was melted out (5xxx feet) over 2 weeks ago. I camped/fished @ Eightmile last weekend – 4600′ – zero snow.

Trip reports from last weekend have the west side snow level at about 3900; so add 100-200′ to that. Of course this all depends on the sun exposure of where you are going. I would monitor wta.org and secondarily nwhikers.net for snow level conditions.

Hey I think this is my first post here!

Edit: No snow whatsoever @ 3000 feet Stampede Pass area off of I90 yesterday – snow level was WAY high as in almost non-existent. Same as Saturday lol.
